last waltz
i trip the not-so-light-fantastic often
waltzing with my daemon lover
whose bones rattle and shake
in a jangling counterpoint
to music only we can hear
he murmurs endearments
meant to entice as we glide
sinuous as two serpents despite the jangling
across a slippery slope
that empties into an endless chasm
he leads me a merry dance
does my tuxedoed daemon
he knows what i like
and plays to it perfectly
his charm is difficult to resist
but hardheaded yankee that i am i do
i have words yet to write
songs left to sing
and miles to go before i sleep
momentarily twined in his deceitful embrace
he's a love-em-and-leave-em kind of guy
interested only as long as the music plays
when you surrender the dance is over
barefoot alone your gown a shroud
sliding sightless into the chasm
