leaving the leaves alone
at the gate i stand
having walked the length
of the back path to it
it is a bright night
the silverdollar moon hangs
off to the west
illuminating autumn's canvas
the sugarmaple leaves lie
a scarlet river beneath halfnaked branches
abandoned in favor of the freedom
of the cool earth
not knowing when the rains come
as they surely will
they will be prisoned in a muddy coffin
part of me wants to push open the gate
and explore
to discover what awaits in the shadows
beyond the perimeter of moonlight
but i am reluctant to trample the fallen
freed at last from the tether of the trees
i turn away
heading back to the house
i wonder what it feels like to be dying
severed from what has sustained one's life
and realize i already know this
i am a fallen leaf
destined for a muddy coffin
awaiting the rains that will surely come

Archways fascinate me and always have. This opening to that great scenery and that moon, silverdollar moon is my kind of setting. Wonderful work and description. F/L
RC DeWinter replied:
This is the end of the back patio behind my brother and sister-in-law's house that opens out onto a few acres of fields and woods...one of my favorite places. Glad you like my interpretation, Randy, thank you.

Gina,Gorgous! You must have steady hands. I don't > You are a great painter. Thanks for the comment on my version of Rothko. What fun to go see that 2 man show. Marsha FV
RC DeWinter replied:
Thanks so much, Marsha. You know all my painting is digital...my hands are steady enough for that, but not for oils.
