year's end
like the rolling year
that never slows its certain progress
to that darkest december day
i too am moving surely
inexorably in the same direction
autumn approaches
swift
confident
layering that which once was
lithe green and graceful
with a patina of rust
that will soon
but not without a certain beauty
overtake the radiance of summer
now well into the autumn
of my life
i too am so dusted
again not without a certain beauty
but sentient being that i am
i unlike the leaves of summer trees
am acutely aware of how fleeting
this latelife beauty is
one day soon i will
look out the window
and gaze upon a landscape
of steel sky and snow
all growing things killed
by the winterkiss of death
and when i turn my gaze
to the mirror there will be
the landscape of my face
transparent to the bone
the leering skull
grinning back at me

Heavenly, Gina. Saw this incredible capture on Appreciating Works From All Mediums and so love this. Had to comment. F/L

Thanks very much, Doug, autumn is my favorite season. I appreciate the kind words and the insights.

Wow! Stunning lighting and prose, Regina! I have been reflecting upon the somber beauty in this waining phase of life. Like fireworks, Autumn is its most beautiful when the trees explode into brilliant fall colors—before fading away into gray smoke, drifting high among the clouds.
