meditation on a shoe

there
in the midnight hallway
one shoe
blue
an aquamarine in a dark ocean

cinderella leaps to mind
i have wondered
what would have happened
if the prince
had never found her

none of the scenarios i conjure
is happily ever after
but who is to say but what
she might have carved out
a perfectly suitable life all the same

and if in the evening starlight
the memory of that glittering night
shadowed her soul in blue
it would not have been
the end of her world

there is beauty
to be found
in unexpected places
melancholy can be
a beautiful thing
