the standard of excellence and worth
hammered into coin
liquefied as gilding for the lily
shaped into endless symbols
proclaiming the magnificence of the possessor

but all that glistens is not gold
fools trade wolf tickets for pyrite
and are left standing by the roadside
pockets bulging with worthless iron sulfide

and gold is not the answer to all dreams
who in times of thirst and hunger of the soul
will be succored by the cold indifference
that lies at the heart of gold?

this will I know will fall on deaf ears
we will continue to our perform frenzied dances
round the icon of all that is desirable
but in the all end set forth on a voyage
in which the tangible is meaningless
