The Night Office
I keep late hours because I love the dark.
It masks the cobwebs of the sullen day,
Freeing the mind a voyage to embark
Beyond what can be seen in bright display.
Provisioned with a printed page or quill
I sail imagination's seas, unbound
By chart or map or discipline's strait chill,
Nothing can my exploration confound.
Shapeshifter I: a queen, a saint, a slave,
Mayhap a midnight bird on raven wing,
In darkness lives the freedom I so crave,
In darkness one can become anything,
And smiling as I slip my mortal skin,
Embrace the freedom found only within.
