The Agony of Autumn
When the kiss of the summer sun
warms the woods
and the meadow is lush and green,
it's easy to escape the raucous intrusions
of those with no interior life,
the ones who rely on the mindless noise
of a flat wired screen to fill their emptiness
with cheap distraction, punctuated only
by the bray of jackass laughter and sleazy innuendo.
When I am enveloped in that sour fog
I run to the peace of nature,
where I hear nothing but
the voice of the universe humming softly.
But now the wheel has turned;
the sun has become a desultory lover
who even when present withholds all
but the faintest warmth.
And worse, he disappears far earlier,
forcing me back to the dreaded cave of winds,
where the electronic chorus continues chanting
the nonsense of the day.
Inside, I sequester myself from the circus,
but the walls are thin, silence an impossibility.
When I can no longer bear it,
I bundle up in layers against the night's blue chill
and, gritting my teeth, head out once more
to shiver on the porch in the gaze of the moon,
sipping tea to keep my blood from congealing;
my fingers stiffen as I try to write.
Sometimes a rebellious tear escapes,
sliding icily down my cheek
as I wonder why I am condemned
to the smallness of the lives of others.

A stark and lonely image that really becomes embellished with your story. I love the story, especially because I do like hearing the voice of the universe humming. It does seem calmer than all the electronics whining in the house. Fabulous work Gina.

Thanks, Bunny, I appreciate the encouragement, especially for works that aren't sexy enough to get a lot of attention. :-)
