La Regina della Rocce
As king and queen we ruled a rocky shore;
the sea below, its ever-restless waves
an unforgiving spume, at constant war
with shells and sand and long-lost sailors' graves.
My lord and master ever was away,
bloodsport of battle was his chosen life.
How many times I begged him here to stay,
how many times refused; he lived for strife.
Keep watch I would along the rocky ledge
for his red lantern shining on the quay.
Alas! One stormy night I missed the edge
and plummeted into the hungry sea.
Now from the grave I tell my sorry tale,
No more my king's return will I surveil.
