My Last Roses (Mother’s Day 2009)
I had no child anymore;
you never made to gift me well,
but on that day you brought me these,
all stained with blues and cream and pink.
I could not parse the meaning here,
why you would spend so lavishly,
but I was grateful and surprised
and kissed you, blushing like a girl.
It’s only now that time has flown
and I look here, at roses caught
in that brief moment, I can see
the message you conveyed with these.
For white in roses means a death,
and death indeed was what you brought
for one year’s grace before you left,
a measure of your cruelty.
