Summer Nights in the River Valley
Not a lot to do out here in the evening,
'specially when you live alone.
Oh sure, you can drive to the city and spend money
on something or another and sometimes I do,
then wake up with my stomach in a knot
of regret
over wasting what I can't afford on overpriced food
or a bad movie or too much bourbon.
Most nights I plant myself on the porch
and watch the sun sink into the river.
Even when summer's instability sends sheets of rain
pouring from thunderclouds here I am,
smoking and counting the seconds
between the lightning
and the next perfect strike thrown by one of those
ghostly little men living in the hills out Moodus way.
I like it when it storms. The counting keeps me
from brooding on all that I've lost
and will never have.
Not things so much - mostly people:
a mother I never knew,
and for that matter a father too.
A son dead too soon, who took with him
most of what was good in this life.
And though I've forsworn you
a thousand and one times, you -
still awake in my loins, still awake in my heart.
But that's muddy water under the swing bridge
and I try not to let you cavort too much in my mind.
Done's done, as we like to say, even when it's really not.
And here I am doing what I try not to do,
raking up pain
from the soft summer earth of my soul,
dredging up nuggets of memory best left buried.
There's only one cure for this,
I have to pray for rain.
