housebound
undistinguished except perhaps for its isolation
the small house sits on a large plot of land
like a wee child lost in a too-big chair
a rutted path long untrodden ribbons one side
otherwise the landscape is bare
but for few trees looming
green shadows on browned ground
i stand in the road and wonder why
it has been abandoned
to the indifference of nature
it has not yet begun to molder
but remains sturdy and snug
i like this house
unprepossessing though it is
and as i linger lost in conjecture
my boundaries melt
i become the house
still sturdy once cared for
but now abandoned
to the indifference of the world
the chill wind blowing in across the fields
rattles through the small chinks
in my clapboarding and my joists creak
a ragged melody with every gust
ghosts of the departed rise from my foundation
dead tenants roaming empty chambers
and coming back to myself
my heart - that empty chamber -
picks up the rhythm of the wind
and reminds me i have not yet begun to molder

Lovely painting and narrative. It reminds me of all the little old country houses from my grandmother's small town--a lot of history to sit on the porch and remember. L F

This is a wonderful, sweet, nostalgic painting, RC! It brings back warm memories for me of my grandparents' farmhouse. My grandmother would be on the porch with open arms ready to hug. Lots of good times in a little house just like this one! Lovely! LFP

Wow--this scene and title brings back so many memories---of my grandmother's house. I had forgotten about hearing my dad say, " I guess 'nobody ta home' (that is not a typo)----I wonder where that came from? Thank you for sharing! LVF
