To An Autumn Rose
A late bloomer you were,
weeks behind your eager sisters,
reserving your beauty
for a time when it is much needed.
Now that they have gone the way
of garden ghosts you stand alone,
your petals rich with color.
As frost approaches
they begin fray a bit, but only on the edges,
drawing in what moisture of life is left to you.
Despite this, you unreservedly unfurl
your offering of late year loveliness.
I know you, rose.
Like you, I am a late bloomer,
unfurling my gifts much later than expected.
Tested by life, I too have frayed a bit,
but unlike you I do not draw myself in.
Made stronger yet more tender by that testing
I reveal my own true colors at last,
without care for the approbation of the world.
Those who need to see will see,
and those who will not see do not matter.
