seeking the sacred
caught fast
in the bleak trappings
of the world mundane
i need to find my way back
to the mystic
only there can one shed
the dust of mediocrity
that suffocating second skin
accruing silently
when one gives all attention
to the essentially meaningless
i stumble, clumsy, wrong-footed,
in the murk
no compass to guide me
and what man-made instrument
can point the path to the orphic?
no matter that i walk into walls
bruise shins on the sharp serrations
of the sensible
i
flightless pilgrim
must journey
until some small star shining
reveals the sanctuary i seek
