A couple of weeks ago I went on what I thought would be a quick shopping expedition to a mall with a friend. Instead I was trapped there for a couple of hours while he doggedly investigated a range of stores looking for a gift for his sister. The last one we visited was a mash-up of clothing, furniture, accessories and just about anything else under the sun you can imagine, all very high-end, all very pricey, much of it very attractive.
Although the first half-hour of wandering around held my interest, by the time my friend finally purchased some scented soap and a few other assorted trinkets, I was thoroughly sick of the stale air, the crowds and of staring at things that in former days I might've purchased but now cannot afford. I made a mental note to refuse the next invitation to shop with this particular friend. They say women are the ones who love to shop, but he was more relentless than any woman friend I've ever shopped with.
A few nights later I had a dream of being back in that very same store, and a not very happy dreamer I was. However, as I walked through the aisles looking at this and that and wishing my unconscious would take me somewhere else, who did I come across but Vincent, calmly sitting at a small corner table with his pad and pencils, sketching away. He looked up with his small shy smile as I approached.
"Bonsoir, mon ami, heureux de vous revoir," he said. "Come and sit with me while I finish this small sketch."
I was delighted to see Vincent again. I pulled over an arty rattan chair and plunked myself down next to him. Peeking at the drawing, I said,
"It's good to see you again. Whatever are you doing here in this madhouse?"
As soon as the words were out of my mouth I could've bitten my tongue, but Vincent was amused and only chuckled quietly.
"I have told you of my admiration for all things Japanese," he said, "and I am making a remembrance of those dishes over there -" here he lifted his pencil and pointed at a glass-windowed cupboard - "so that when I return home I might be able to find some like it."
I got up to look more closely at the crockery that had caught his eye. What he was sketching was a stack of wide shallow bowls, quite plain but very colorful and beautifully made.
"They are lovely, Vincent," I said. "Do you think you will find any like these in France?"
"Oh I think I can manage to ferret out some similar," he answered. "I know of a few shops that import from the east. And if all else fails I can send the drawing to Theo and ask him to look for me."
Satisfied with the sketch, he closed the notepad and got up.
"It's time for me to go," he said. "If I manage to purchase the dishes I will let you know."
As so often happens in dreams, Vincent melted away and I awoke. As glad as I was to have run into Vincent again, I was happy to be done with that store once and for all.
Last night I saw Vincent, albeit briefly, once again. In the middle of a dream about traveling in Europe suddenly I was standing in a largish kitchen next to a glass-fronted wall cabinet. Vincent materialized at my side, smiling.
"I am making good on my promise," he said. "I have found the dishes."
That was all he said, and the next moment I was awake. I jumped out of bed and immediately started to work on what I saw in Vincent's kitchen. Here are the Japanese bowls as best I remember them from my dream.

RC DeWinter replied:
This was actually two sets of bowls in a windowed cupboard at Anthropologie, which is a chain of upscale (translation: expensive) home goods, clothing and accesories stores. I added two bowls to one side of the original photo and made it into a window. Glad you like how it turned out, thank you so much.

I love the colors and composition in this one. The blues of the frame and background complement the golden orange tones of the dishes. Simple is always good and this piece illustrates that perfectly. FA - L, F, P, FB
