A spray of "Mirabilis jalapa" ("four o'clocks" or "the marvel of Peru") blooms beautifully even as its earlier blossoms have faded and closed.
A native of South America, four o'clocks have become naturalized in tropical and warm temperate regions around the world. In cooler areas it dies back at the first frost and then blooms again in spring from its tuberous roots. The flowers are not formed from petals but are an extension of the calyx, and one plant can exhibit varied flowers and color patterns. The flowers normally open in the late afternoon and on into the evening, hence the name four o'clocks, and are very fragrant, but close for good the following morning and are replaced by fresh blooms in the afternoon.
This painting has been FEATURED in too many groups to list.
