it's late

1:24 am to be precise

or maybe early
depending on your timezone
and your point of view

not a creature is stirring
in this barracks of a house

i've climbed the stairs -
the very ones
my father tumbled down
and at the bottom of which
broke his crown -
to the bedroom
with the window facing west

and how fitting for a witch
to face the west
though the eyes of the knotty pine walls
mock me

i slept in this room -
long ago and faraway -
for many years

i don't call it my room

for as long as
my drill sergeant mother lives

(and i have no doubt
she will bury me
and cry a few self-righteous tears
when my ashes hit the dirt)
