Collateral Damage

The air is crisp, fragrant
with the earthy scents of autumn,
and everywhere the fallen children of the trees;
this is October New England.
To walk across the lawn is almost sacrilege;
the tapestry, baroque in its infinite shadings,
elaborate arrangements,
will be rent by even the most careful of footfalls.
But there are things to be collected -
the newspaper, the mail -
and there's no preventing the depredations
of the deer, landing with heavy hooves
as they leap in the light of dawn.
Still, I tread reluctantly, even as I realize
at some point there is no choice
but to destroy something beautiful.
